In this section I would particularly like to thank my helpers -
Amelia and Julia who are going to show you some of their craft.
It is great fun to have a box where you can save bits and pieces to use.
Things like lids,
cardboard cylinders, sewing material leftovers, pipe cleaners, paddle pop sticks, egg cartons
and boxes can all be kept together with some safety scissors, craft glue, a stapler,
masking tape, marking pens and some non-toxic water based paint/brushes.
Here Julia is making pet rock paper weights as gifts for her family and friends.
Paper weights are to keep piles of papers from blowing away in the wind, so they
are useful as well as being a happy decoration. Julia has used lovely smooth river stones with
acrylic paint, stick-on eyes and pipe cleaners. 3D fabric liners are great for lines and dots if you
have them.
If you have some wooden dolly pegs, you can have fun turning them into little people by
dressing them up with some bits of ribbon, coloured paper, wool etc. like these.
The little critters in front are made from plasticine and tooth picks.

Maybe you can access some plain calico dolls from a craft shop or make your own. It is
lots of fun turning them into different characters. Here are some we created and we are
sure you will think of some wonderful ones too. The spotted skirt is made without sewing by
cutting out a circle and putting little hole in the centre, just big enough to fit up over
the doll's legs.

One school holiday, Amelia Julia and I decided to make a big clown doll.
We had lots of leftover materials in pink so this was a great way to use them up.
First we drew a large doll shape on an old
pale pink pillow slip, cut it out, sewed it together except for a slot at the top of the head,
turned it inside out and filled it with some cushion filling.
Then we sewed up the slot and used whatever we had to dress her. We used thick knitting wool
for her hair and had a great time plaiting and arranging it. It was a lot of work but we
all enjoyed it and think she looks really cool don't you?
Box craft can be very creative. If you only have a small area, just collect small
boxes but if you have plenty of room, you might like to work with bigger ones like these.
Here are some craft ideas using boxes taped together with masking tape and painted.
The doll's house was made by Julia and the giraffe with the gorgeous eyes,
by Amelia. For the doll's house some of the roof had to be cut away to access it for play.
Ask an adult to help you cut windows and doors as well because it can be quite hard to cut
thick cardboard. This little house was painted inside and out and had wrapping paper glued
down on the floor area. Paddle-pop sticks were glued on to keep the
curtains in place.

You can use your imagination to glue things onto a painting too, using whatever you have.
Here Julia has used real sand sprinkled onto glue for a beach, cotton wool for clouds,a row of
tiny shells and little cocktail umbrellas to look like beach umbellas. We found the little string
dolls at a craft shop.
It is a lovely happy scene Julia.
Thank you for sharing it with us.

The following craft project is "OCEAN IN A BOX" initiated by Artive Kids in Hong Kong.
Here are some of the entries in their wonderful exhibition and photographs of the prizewinners.

Julia and I also had fun creating an Ocean in a Box also (below) and we donated it to the newly opened
Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre at Terrigal NSW to help decorate the children's area.

Have fun crafting everyone! If you would like to send in some pictures of your craftwork we
may be able to publish them here. Just attach a digital photo image
to an email to: jduell@pnvr.com.au Tell us just your first name, age and the town or country where you live.
